Summer Term Schedule: 6/10/2024-8/16/2024

Kazone presents a 10-week intensive portfolio prep course available during the summer break. This program is perfect for students eager to pursue their creative journey further and willing to invest additional time and effort during the school off-season. Participants will engage in personalized 1:1 consultations, during which Kazone will develop a detailed, customized plan for their 10-week creative journey, perfectly tailored to their goals.

MONDAY

 

2:00 pm – 5:00 pm Direct Observation Drawing 101  [Nathan Cooke]

Level [Foundation/Traditional medium]

Prerequisite course: None

Platform: In-person

Students will learn how to quickly sketch ideas by simplifying objects using organic shapes such as animal, insect, reptile, and others. For the first 5 weeks, they will be learning the fundamentals of language and perspective, as well as quickly sketching out what they see and imagine.

For the rest of the weeks, the instructor will teach and guide you through the process of creating your own personal sketchbook with composition and layout studies.

5:30 pm – 8:30 pm Visual Communication Sketch & Creating a Personal Sketchbook [Nathan Cooke]

Platform: In-person

Prerequisite course: Optional: Figure Drawing, Visual Communication, Intro to Digital Painting]

Platform: In person/zoom

This 10-week course is only available during the summer semester and teaches the essentials of being a storyteller.

Students will be taught the full process, beginning with the script and ending with the finished boards.
Students will learn how to frame and cut sequences, as well as how to transition into the next frames and how to use camera angles to communicate their tales flawlessly. This course is highly recommended for student preparing portfolio for Game Arts and Character Animation.

TUESDAY

3:30 pm – 6:30 pm Illustration Portfolio Prep Intensive [Valeria Kwon]

Prerequisite course: Vis Comm, Beginner level painting class.

Platform: Zoom

This course will teach the fundamentals of background painting/design theory using Adobe Photoshop. This course teaches basic shape language, color and light theory, painting technique, and a series of master copy lectures. The course will lead to the student designing their own environment using the essence learned throughout the course. Highly recommended for students interested in Entertainment Design.

7:00 pm – 10:00 pm Worldbuilding & Vehicle Design for Entertainment Design [Scott Song]

Platform: Zoom

This course focuses on the fundamentals of designing elements for video games and film environments. The student will learn how to conduct research, create a landmark, and design the interior and exterior of their own story.

THURSDAY

2:00 pm – 5:00 pm Figurative painting portfolio prep [Matteo Di Ventra]

Level [Foundation/Traditional medium]

Prerequisite course: None

Platform: In-person

This painting class focuses on painting nude and costume figures with traditional mediums (Acrylic or Oil).
The lesson's ultimate goal is for a student to learn how to paint with a solid understanding of color, light, and texture and to create a one-of-a-kind conceptual picture that embodies the model's characteristics and storytelling.
This course is recommended for students who want to hone their figurative painting skills for concept design and illustration.

A live model will be available for direct observational painting sessions.

5:30 pm – 8:30 pm Intro to Figure Drawing [James Galindo]

Platform: In-person

The most important foundation of all, students will be learning how to draw the human figure and learn about anatomy. Students will be drawn from observing the live model. They will be learning the importance of gestures, volume, and weights and apply them to their drawing. This foundation is important even for professionals.​

6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Blender for Concept Art

Level [Intermediate/ Digital medium]

Prerequisite course: None

Platform: Zoom

This course introduces students to Blender's essential tools and modeling techniques, as well as how to use the 3D program to create stunning 2D images. The ultimate goal of this lesson is for students to be able to use Blender as a creative tool, similar to Adobe software. The instructor will demonstrate actual modeling abilities to assist students in creating a fully finished scene by the end of the semester. The course will also cover lighting, texture, and how to position your camera to create an environment that will help you tell your tale. The teacher will show how to use rendered shot as a canvas to create a complete environment concept art.

FRIDAY

2:30 pm – 5:30 pm Intro to Entertainment/Game Design for Beginners [Scott Song]

Prerequisite course: Visual communication is recommended but not required.

Platform: In person/zoom

This course is intended to teach essential tools, primarily the painting features of Adobe Photoshop.
The lesson is perfect for students who have no prior experience with Photoshop. Students will learn how to set up a canvas and use the necessary tools to paint.
Every week, a new lecture and in-class exercise is presented, such as sphere lighting study, texture study, still life study, landscape master copy, and more.

This course is intended to teach essential tools, primarily the painting features of Adobe Photoshop.

SATURDAY

9:00 am – 12:00 pm Character Design for Entertainment [Michael Nienaber]

Prerequisite course: Vis Comm, Beginner level painting class, Intro to Figure Drawing.

Platform: Zoom

Students will be introduced to the character development process from concept to final rendering for various genres such as animation, feature film, and video game in this course. Studnet will be exposed to the creative process, including how to make thumbnails, grayscale studies, color/light studies, and a final representation of a prop, character, or creature

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm Intro to Figure Drawing [Matteo Di Ventra]

Students are challenged to develop design solutions to all of the above by experimenting with a wide range of

media, including logo, books, and packaging to create compelling graphics identities and branded experiences.​

7:00 pm – 10:00 pm Environment Design for Entertainment [Charles Lee]

Level [Advanced/Digital medium]

Prerequisite course: Vis Comm, Beginner level painting class, Intermediate Background Design class.

Platform: In-person/Zoom

This course teaches the essentials of developing and painting environments for video games and film. The student will learn the research process, as well as how to create thumbnails, grayscale studies, color/light studies, and a final rendering of an interior, exterior, or keyshot based on the student's personal story.
